Watching The Wheels - John Lennon
..just, tears of joy.
One of the many tragedies of John Lennon’s death 29 years ago tonight was that his final album, Double Fantasy, marked the first time (at least as reflected in his songwriting) that he was happy with life. Songs like “Starting Over,” “Woman,” and Beautiful Boy” are notable because they display Lennon’s master songwriting with none of the paranoia and neuroses that are found in his earlier songs.
“Watching the Wheels” is, for me, the ultimate statement of the joy Lennon found by being able to lead a normal life. Part celebration of existence and part gentle rebuke of his critics (one need only hear the first line), it is maybe the best statement we have of the simple pleasures Lennon found in life — a life taken at an incomprehensibly young age (40) given the canon he left behind.
