Miles Davis - Blue In Green

This song is perfect for the moment (a lazy, blustery afternoon as the monochrome of winter has set in).

Watching The Wheels - John Lennon

..just, tears of joy.

One of the many tragedies of John Lennon’s death 29 years ago tonight was that his final album, Double Fantasy, marked the first time (at least as reflected in his songwriting) that he was happy with life. Songs like “Starting Over,” “Woman,” and Beautiful Boy” are notable because they display Lennon’s master songwriting with none of the paranoia and neuroses that are found in his earlier songs.

“Watching the Wheels” is, for me, the ultimate statement of the joy Lennon found by being able to lead a normal life. Part celebration of existence and part gentle rebuke of his critics (one need only hear the first line), it is maybe the best statement we have of the simple pleasures Lennon found in life — a life taken at an incomprehensibly young age (40) given the canon he left behind.

John Lennon - Isolation

On the 29th Anniversary.

Having swilled larger than recommended dosages of NyQuil all weekend, I feel detached. My head cold symptoms have vanished, but so has my equilibrium. The graffiti on the men’s room wall swims before my eyes like my father’s lecture notes. I am dazed, unable to comprehend the simple messages that previous pilgrims to this spot have left for me on the wall. “Eat Shit,” I am advised. Richard Russo, Straight Man

There is no jurisdiction of any kind, at any level, at any time in the 30-year history of NAEP that has ever registered such low numbers,” said Michael Casserly, executive director of the Council on Great City Schools, a Washington, D.C.-based coalition of urban school districts. “They are barely above what one would expect simply by chance, as if the kids simply guessed at the answers,” he said.
